versity.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=148&proposalid=13680\nAttendees will lear
n that the most successful organizations are those that focus on Business D
riven Data Intelligence. Data Governance still plays a vital role, but it&r
squo;s not about acquiring the data, it’s about being able to action
it and use it. \n\nIn the last couple of decades, Data Governance ensu
red organizations the data they were acquiring would arrive in its proper p
lace with what was believed to be the proper permissions. However, division
s were often created between those leading the Data Governance charge (usua
lly IT) and the rest of the organization.\n\nThe problem:\n\n
Data was not completely usable (thought was not given to how the request fo
r data should be made, e.g., form fields on a form)\n
Those needing access to the data were left out or not considered\n
As data projects were assigned through agile workflows, little to no contex
t was given to the need for the data and its purpose\n\nThe solution:\n\n
Business Driven Data Intelligence\n
Focus is on using the data to inform decisions instead of simply acquiring
it\n
Focus is on sharing the data — People understand why you need ac
cess to the data and how you should receive it\n\nHow to Move to Business D
riven Data Intelligence — Hitting a Home Run for Everyone to Che
er about:\n\n1) Start from the top and adopt a Business-Driven Data Intelli
gence mindset. Understand that data is meant to be shared, not kept to a se
lect few. Realize your teams have different needs and reasons for accessing
the data. You can give people the freedom to access data while having prop
er permissions in place. Encourage a Business-Driven Data approach for the
entire organization to follow.\n\n2) Set up Data Literacy. Help others unde
rstand what the data means, how you plan to use it, and how having the data
helps drive insights and actions.\n\n3) Abandon the old. If you are still
collecting data, but not using it, then stop collecting! If you sent 1,000
emails to the same email address and not once were they opened, then stop s
ending.\n\n4) Accept that data is dirty. It’s never going to be 100%,
but you shouldn’t be making marketing decisions on 20-40% of bad dat
a either. Work to correct data at its source. If collecting data in a form,
ensure governance is in place so that the form contains a valid entry. Ask
what you want to know. So often we want to know something from our custome
rs but are afraid to ask. Use drop-down menus to guide the responses you de
sire.\n\n5) Remember that you (as an organization) are only as profitable a
s the data you can utilize and draw insights from. It’s not about the
data, it’s what you can do with the data.\n
